Accounting Degree & Certificates

The Business, Legal and Technology (BLT) Education Department offers a degree and three certificates for students interested in the accounting program. The advising sheets provide a detailed list of courses required to complete a degree or certificate.

Associate in Science Degree, Accounting (60 credits/20 courses)

  • The associate in science (AS) degree is a 60-credit program that prepares students for paraprofessional accounting careers in private business, public and private accounting firms, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies.
  • Students learn the fundamentals of accounting, payroll taxes, tax preparation, business, and computer software applications.
  • As a capstone to the accounting degree, students enroll in an internship course where they gain actual job experience while earning credits towards graduation.The AS degree articulates to the University of Hawai`i-West Oahu toward a bachelor of arts in business administration with a concentration in accounting. An advisor may provide detailed information about the courses required or recommended for articulation

Certificate of Achievement, Accounting (30 credits/10 courses)

  • The certificate of achievement (CA) is a 30-credit program that prepares students for entry-level clerical and paraprofessional accounting positions in private business, public and private accounting firms, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies.
  • Students get practical, hands-on experience practicing workplace-relevant skills and techniques.
  • All CA courses apply to the associate in science degree in accounting.

Certificate of Competence, Payroll Preparer (15 credits/5 courses)

  • The certificate of competence (CO) is a 15-credit department certificate awarded to students who complete courses that provide specific job-related skills in payroll preparation. These skills will allow students to accurately and efficiently prepare returns for employers with simple to moderately complex payroll systems and employment tax returns.
  • Successful completers should also be able to administer all or a portion of a payroll subsystem for a company or client.
  • All CO courses apply to the associate in science degree in accounting.

Certificate of Competence, Tax Preparer (15 credits/5 courses)

  • The certificate of competence (CO) is a 15-credit department certificate awarded to students who complete courses that provide specific job-related skills in tax preparation. These skills will allow students to accurately and efficiently prepare tax returns for clients with simple to moderately complex returns.
  • Successful completers should also be able to administer all or portion of a payroll subsystem for a company and prepare required employment tax returns and other forms.
  • All CO courses apply to the associate in science degree in accounting.
